What Mindful Practice Involves

You don’t need incense or meditation beads to practice mindfulness. The practice has evolved from its traditional roots and is about engaging with the world in a different, more aware way. Here are four principles that summarize the practice:

  1. Press Pause and Be Present: Life often moves at breakneck speed. Mindfulness invites you to switch gears, let go of thoughts about the past or future, and focus on the present. You might create a small ritual, like taking a few deep breaths, to signal the start of your practice. It’s normal for your mind to wander; simply bring yourself back to the present moment.
  2. Curiosity, Not Judgment: Approach mindfulness with curiosity rather than judgment. Let go of preconceived notions and explore your experiences with a fresh perspective. This can help you engage more fully with the present moment.
  3. Sensing, Not Slowing: While slowing down can help in the beginning, the goal is to fully experience each moment through your senses. Notice what you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. Allow thoughts and emotions to come and go, and gently bring your focus back to your senses.
  4. Practice, Not Perfection: Meditation is an ongoing practice without a final destination. Don’t worry about getting it “right.” You’re unlearning ingrained habits and beliefs, so be patient and trust that you’re doing meaningful work. Remember, it’s about practice, not perfection.
