Finding Balance: Lessons from Vertigo

Lately, I’ve been noticing the swirl of worries and doubts surrounding me. Like many of us, I found myself caught up in concerns—some personal, some professional—that seemed to pull me away from the grounded presence I work so hard to cultivate. It was as though these thoughts and emotions were spinning around me, unsettling my inner balance.

Then, a few days ago, I was faced with a very real, physical manifestation of this inner turmoil: vertigo. Out of nowhere, I was hit with sudden dizziness, nausea, and my blood pressure spiked. Paul and I were understandably concerned, and we headed to the ER. Five hours later, the good news was that my heart was perfectly fine, but I was diagnosed with vertigo, and a vestibular migraine was also mentioned.

In the ER, a physical therapist performed specific maneuvers to help dislodge tiny crystals in my inner ear that can sometimes get stuck and cause the spinning sensation. As strange as it sounds, I couldn’t help but see a parallel between this physical imbalance and the emotional imbalance I had been experiencing. Just like those crystals, my worries and doubts had gotten “stuck,” and they were knocking me off my center.

Since that experience, I’ve been reminded just how crucial it is to stay grounded, no matter what life throws at us—whether it’s a swirling mind or a swirling world. While I’m taking things one day at a time physically, I’m also working on staying centered emotionally and spiritually. Meditation, especially on the theme of “Balance,” has been my go-to. I’ve shared some of these practices with my students, encouraging them to find their own sense of grounding during uncertain times.

I’m truly grateful for all the thoughts, love, and support sent my way during this time. It has reminded me that even when the world feels like it’s spinning—literally or figuratively—there is always a way to find our footing again. If you’re feeling unbalanced, I invite you to pause, breathe, and tap into the grounding that’s always available within you.

With deep gratitude and balance,
Deb
